March 15 – absentee ballots may be delivered to the Board of Elections office but not to polling places on Election Day.

ERA – It ain’t all about the dresses!!  One year after her Oscar acceptance speech that included an impassioned plea for pay equity, actor Patricia Arquette has launched a petition calling for lawmakers to vote in favor of ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment to give women a clear constitution basis for challenging discrimination.  “We’re not saying women are better than men.  All it says is all people are equal in the United States regardless of their sex.  And who can argue with that?” said Arquette.  Source:  Yahoo News

Voter Registration  – How did we do?

We had a PHENOMENAL nine weeks since December.  In that time here in Wake County, we:

  • registered 623 voters
  • had 1505 voter education conversations
  • gave 245 volunteer hours
  • trained 58 new voter registration volunteers
  • and located & established 5 successful long-term VR sites

This is an incredible achievement and one of which everyone who has donated their time should be very proud.

WHAT NEXT?
The way we measure how successful our work has been is by tracking whether people actually vote! Our goal is to remind and encourage people to vote (no issues, no candidates, just vote.)  We do this by sending them a reminder card in the mail and calling them during Early Voting to encourage them to go out and vote.
We need your help with this final step.  We have four events scheduled to do phone banks during EV and then just before the primary.

Road Trip for Reproductive Rights Join reproductive rights activists in DC March 2nd! Next Wednesday, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) will hear oral arguments in the TX case Whole Women’s Health v Hellerstedt. TX has imposed burdensome and unnecessary restrictions designed to limit women’s access to abortion, closing most of the clinics in the state. If the SCOTUS were to uphold these restrictions, Roe v Wade would essentially be a meaningless statute. NARAL NC is chartering two buses to take Triangle residents up to Washington for the oral arguments.

This group will be outside with the other demonstrators, and there will be many present(from both sides). This is going to be a historic case no matter the decision so this day trip would be an opportunity to take part in something that will have a lot of media and national attention, as well as an opportunity to meet lots of people and get fired up about this movement we are a part of.

The bus will leave early, around 3:30am or so, returning by 5pm. Plenty of time to sleep on the bus, and no worries about parking when you get there. If you want to go with us to DC and haven’t signed up yet, please do so today!

March 2 Now or Never NC presents: Redistricting Reform and Jobs from 5:30- 7:30pm. A one-hour forum followed by happy hour, all at Fullsteam Brewery at 726 Rigsbee Ave,, Durham, NC 27701.
Now or Never NC is excited that two well-regarded experts will join them to provide updates re: redistricting reform efforts and job creation in North Carolina: John Quinterno of South by North Strategies and Jane Pinsky of the NC Coalition for Lobbying and Government Reform.
Light complimentary appetizers, and Food Truck on site. http://www.nowornevernc.org/

Voting Documentary

TWC and the League of Women Voters have created a 30 minute documentary to help explain why and how to vote in NC in 2016. It’s a good summary and involves quite a few faces we all know! It can be streamed online 10 times without being a TWC subscriber. http://www.twcnews.com/nc/triangle-sandhills/politics/2016/02/26/decision-2016–make-your-vote-count.html

It is also showing again on TV several times before the election. Airing several more times before the Primary Election on the TWC News channel, it is listed as Decision 2016: Make your Vote Count.
